Some problems arose with the first Kukri I bought.

"Quite simply, the Kukri is one of the best fighting / survival knives of its size. It can cut with the power of a hatchet, but also be used for skinning or fine carving..."
These were my thoughts after buying that initial Kukri:
KUKRI KNIFE, INITIAL TEST, 16, NOVEMBER 2003.
Though Old Jimbo, of
http://www.oldjimbo.com/survival/ltc.html likes to spell the name of this
knife as K U K U R I, it is most often found on the web as Kukri, or Gurkha
Kukri. While we are on the subject, it was Old Jimbo’s site that sort of got me
interested in the larger, curved knives.
I took a metal file to my “Simple Indian Reproduction” of a Kurkri Knife, (to quote one site on the web,) and it took an edge well. The reader should note that I am used to sharpening a machete, having done so for about forty years or so. The Kukri sharpens similarly, and I noted one safety aspect we use on the machete.
The first four inches or so on a machete, near the handle,
should never be sharpened. That is done so that if your hand slips off the
handle, it does not loose it’s fingers on the knife blade. The Kukri is
similarly wide and dull right after the handle. One cuts with the more curved
part of the blade.
ON TO ITS USE:
I am sold! The Kukri cuts as Old Jimbo said it would. If anything, it may cut
too efficiently! For the first test, I just went out and cut a walking stick. An
easy swing cut half-way through a sapling in a very controlled and "fluid"
manner. A harder swing would have chopped much deeper.
In Panama, where I lived for a couple of years as a boy, we used what is called a Machete. We pronounce it ma-shet-ee. Spanish speaking people pronounce something like this: ma-chet-a, where the final “a” is long.
In Panama the
grass grows to something like four feet high. The long- bladed machete was
an excellent tool for
cutting such vegetation. Unfortunately, we don't have stuff like that
here.
I have found a tool from another country, called a Kukri Knife, that will
cut through a wrist-thick sapling with one blow. The curved knife is swung
hard, and the angle of the blade caused is to "slice" through what it hits.
As you swing downward, the blade approaches the brush
at an
angle of shear that multiplies its force.
All well and good, you might say? What of it? The Kukri is a much more versatile survival tool than almost any other cutting edge.
You need to know that it will not replace an axe or hatchet, for felling small or large trees. You may still need those in your kit. What the Kukri does do is apply itself well to the kinds of brush-shearing-tree-limbing service you will need it for. I highly recommend it.
SAS Parang .htm John "Lofty" Wiseman recommends a knife with a curve similar to
the Kukri. What we are looking for is one carry-able knife that will do
serviceable survival work. (I intend to make the curve of the handle on my
re-made Kukri similar to the one in the picture on the above HTM. ) Referenced

so much, this "master" index is needed.
You seem to have recommended two Kukris, which one do you mean? readers question

Trimming the side branches was even easier. As you swing it, the curved blade of
the Kukri both “chops and slices” at the same time. Very efficient.
(Since writing the above I found the knife is made from spring
steel.)
To quote one web site: "Quite simply, the Kukri is one of the
best fighting / survival knives of its size. It can cut with the power of a
hatchet, but also be used for skinning or fine carving. Many users consider them
stronger and safer than hatchets.
I would post-script to say that the Kukri Blade is much more "fluid" in the wood than any hatchet.

This is a good knife, with good features. However, some problems have arisen as I worked with this particular brand and cost-range Kukri Knife. Converting it for field use was the way I went with mine: Consider these articles:

The day I came to the LORD, before I knew what a vision was, I saw myself walking through a devastated United States of America. You need to accept Jesus as LORD and make what preparations He would have you make. This site has basic only, survival information, hence the name Survival Primer, or beginning teaching book. Most of the information has been gleaned from the internet. The entire site, Survival and Christian, is saved to a single CD disk that you can own. The Christian teaching is from my church, and is original to it. God has changed my life through the ministry of my church. God will change yours, through Jesus Christ, if you let Him. My prayer is that God lead you into all truth, and that the abiding love that is expressed through His Son, Jesus Christ, come to rule and abide and infill your life, perfectly. Paul.
