WINCHESTER  RIFLES AND SHOTGUNS   August 18. 2008

Paul Phillips   PO Box 38  Yadkinville. NC 27055

Dear Mr. Phillips.

Thank you for your recent letter regarding the Winchester Model 490.  We appreciate your time in contacting us.

I would like to direct you attention to the picture of the serial number you recently sent to us. There is an asterisk behind the serial number --------*.

This is the mark that was used to signify the completion of the recall.

Sincerely,
Winchester Customer Service ,

Blanked out serial number, showing Asterisk, of my rifle.  I am not implying safe use of any firearm, this is but the info I got about it by requesting.  No reference made to the reason of the recall, but found some reference to at least one used Winchester 490 slap firing.  A slam fire is the firing of a cartridge caused by the closing of the bolt as the round is fed into the chamber.

Blanked out serial number, with following asterisk shown

below a picture of the Winchester 490 I bought.  Found seemingly in unused, or very little used.   I would guess there were under a dozen rounds ever fired through it.   Facts come from verbal history, that first owner just put it in the closet, and never fired it, as well as internal examination.  Almost no residue inside of rifle.  Parts appear to be in pristine condition.  Rifle found internally clean and in brand new condition, inside. There were some leopard-spot rust marks on receiver.   Slight, only slight blemishes on stock.  At worst, superficial problems. What a find.
